Marie-José Martinez, Engineer-General Second Class, joined ONERA on May 3rd as Wind Tunnels director. She was previously director of the DGA propellant test centre. She succeeds Patrick Wagner, with whom she will be working closely until his retirement. A look back at a brilliant career with a predominant aeronautical and international focus.
The COVID crisis has put a strain on stakeholders in the aeronautics sector. To revive the industry, the government announced the 2035 ‘clean sky’ objective. ONERA, which has the mission of preparing the aerospace technologies of tomorrow, had anticipated this by devoting a great deal of research to reducing the environmental impact of aircraft. Focus no. 1 on ONERA's work on new forms of propulsion.
On 22 and 23 April, the kick-off event for the German-French cooperation between DLR and ONERA for the joint virtual research center "AI4Aerospace Engineering" took place. The cooperation between the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the French Office national d'études et de recherches aérospatiales (ONERA) had its beginning last year at the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget. The goal is a German-French "virtual" AI research center for aerospace.
In the context of increasing interest for airships, ONERA conduct researches on one of the most sensitive and crucial issues for these vehicles: the dynamic behaviour in turbulent atmosphere and in gusts, including when flying at low altitude.
Since October 2019, the Modane-Avrieux wind tunnels, one of ONERA's crown jewels, have a new director. Known and recognised throughout Europe, and indeed internationally, they have been the testing ground for some of the aeronautical industry's most celebrated creations, with the precision of these installations and the very high level of technical expertise of their personnel allowing concepts to be tested under optimal conditions.
