In the framework of SHANEL, a joint Franco-German research project financed for Onera by the DPAC [ Aeronautic Civil Programs Agency], specialists in aerodynamics at Onera used the in-house" software package elsA to calculate the blade-vortex interactions on a rotor [rotor Bo 105] during descent flight. A grid of 31 million points was needed in order to calculate the flow domain. "
When a wall incurves abruptly, as the rear glass of a car does, the flow is not able to follow the shape of the wall and separates from it: there is flow detachment. Flow separation is involved in many aeronautic applications. The flight domain of an aircraft as well as the working limits of its engines can be limited by this phenomena. That is why studies focus on understanding and predicting flow detachment.
Future miniature drones must be supplied by miniature energy sources. The best adapted seem to be micro-turbines. However, designing of turbines measuring a few cubic centimetres is a bit chancy. Researchers are looking into flow modification, the design of new geometries, micro-manufacturing and thermal studies.
Infrared light detectors allow all the objects that are not at the same temperature as their environment to be observed. They have many applications in the military and civilian fields. But these detectors are more complex than visible spectrum cameras, since they themselves emit infrared radiation. Several technologies coexist to cover all uses.
