Augmented Reality and Aerodynamic Simulation
Manipulate a virtual helicopter model that has been used for an aerodynamic simulation, and examine it from every angle.
The above shows two possible operating modes:
In "mouse" or "keyboard" mode
This mode is the simplest to implement. No webcam is needed. The experimenter simply manipulates the 3D object on his/her screen with a mouse or the keyboard keys.
- Launch the "Frontières" Java application (no risk for your computer, requires Java version 6)
- For Start2.jnlp, select "Open"
- For the application signature, select "Run"
- Accept the terms and conditions of use that you read earlier
- Click on Start, then OK (for the NoCamera mode)
- You are now ready to start: either in the viewer window with the mouse (each of the 3 buttons has its own function), or with the arrow keys after having clicked on "Keyboard Control"

- Not all platforms were tested. The application may not be compatible with some hardware configurations.
In "augmented reality" mode
[For the moment it does not work with Windows 64 bits]
You must have a webcam. The moving helicopter will then be "immersed" in the visible video stream on your screen and can be guided using a marker printed on a sheet handled by the experimenter. This is the augmented reality principle. It is necessary to:
- Have a webcam connected to your computer
- Print the specific marker that you can download here
- Install the appropriate "Java Media Framework (JMF)" for your platform
- Access the JMF Help page (French version)
- See the conditions of use
- Launch the "Frontières" Java application (no risk for your computer, requires Java version 6)
- For Start2.jnlp,, select "Open"
- For the application signature, select "Run"
- Accept the terms and conditions of use that you read earlier

This project was carried out by Mathieu Ferment, a Supélec trainee in Onera’s Communication Division, during the summer of 2011 under the responsibility of Sylvain Gaultier.
It is an original idea of Thomas Renaud, a research engineer specializing in helicopters in the Applied Aerodynamics Department of Onera. Thomas Renaud also provided numerical simulation results obtained with the elsA aerodynamic simulation software.
Conditions of use
The augmented reality software "Frontières" (borders), available to site visitors onera.fr (hereinafter "Users") on the website onera.fr, allows the superposition of a 3D model of an object in a real environment through the use of a image to be printed.
The Software is only available on the website of ONERA onera.fr.
Responsibility
ONERA can not be held responsible for any damage , direct or
indirect, whatever the cause, nature or consequences from
use of the Software.
The Software is available 24 hours 7 days 24 and 7 for use on the network
through the website onera.fr, with the exception of particular case of force majeure, problems, problems related to the structure of communication networks or technical difficulties. For reasons of maintenance, technical services
ONERA can interrupt at any time onera.fr the website and access to the Software.
ONERA can not be held responsible for any inability to access the software.
ONERA is committed to not record or store images filmed by the webcam of
the user and represented on the screen when using the Software.
Intellectual Property Rights
The Software and 3D images of objects are the exclusive property of ONERA.
Any use or reproduction, in whole or in part, the Software and / or 3D images of objects require the prior written permission of ONERA. Any use or reproduction, total or partial, of the Software by any means whatsoever, without the consent of ONERA may constitute an infringement punishable by article L 122-4 of the French Code of intellectual property.
